The Amazing Watermelon

O LORD, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions.

—PSALM 104:24

Scripture Reading: Psalm 104:24-30

As a young boy of nine, I went to my grandfather’s farm in Texas to help with the chores. I would ride behind a team of mules to plow the ground after tending to the weeds that grew in the furrows. I fed the animals at night, picked up the eggs for morning breakfast, and picked cotton in season. During the heat of summer, we would get very hot and sweaty. One of our rewards was to go to the watermelon patch and break open a ripe melon. The juice ran all over, and this sweet refreshment gave us a great break in a very hard lifestyle. The watermelon is an amazing plant!

According to William Jennings Bryan, a famous American lawyer and creationist, a watermelon speaks volumes about God. Bryan wrote:

Recently someone planted just one little seed in the ground. Under the influence of sunshine and rain, it took off its coat and went to work gathering about 200,000 times its own weight. It forced all that material through a tiny stem and built a watermelon. On the outside it had a covering of green; within that, a rind of white; and within that, a core of red. Scattered on the inside were more seeds—each capable of doing the same work all over again.

There are many questions we can ask: “Who designed such a melon? How did the watermelon seed get so strong? How did the color and flavoring get inside the juicy melon?”

Bryan pointed out that until we can figure out the mysteries of the watermelon, how can we begin to understand the awesomeness of creation. We only have to look around to see the power of God revealed in all He has made.

As today’s verse said, “O LORD, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all.”
